A ROSSENDALE primary school has launched a ‘buy a brick’ campaign to help complete a £200,000 development.

Staff at Edenfield CofE Primary School in Market Street, Edenfield are appealing to parents and other members of the community to help them raise the remaining £100,000 needed to modernise the school as part of its 150th anniversary.

The first phase of the development includes the building of a corridor to enable pupils to reach all classrooms without having to cut through others.

It will also incorporate the building of a glass conservatory to be used during infants reading time – which is currently underway.

School governor Anne Cheetham, who is also an Edenfield councillor, said: “Work is currently underway to modernise the school ready for the new term in September.

“The work has had to be done in two phases for the 150th anniversary celebrations as we are still trying to raise the remaining £100,000 with our buy-a-brick appeal.”

The second phase of the development, which is hoped to be completed in a year’s time, will see a new kitchen built at the school.

At present school dinners are prepared off the premises and delivered in heated trays.

The previous school kitchen was converted into classrooms 20 years ago.

Coun Cheetham said: “I urge everyone to get behind Edenfield Primary School by buying a brick.

“A brick can be bought for as little as £1 or as much as one wants to give.

“Following all the work the school will be able to increase its intake from 20 children to 25 and become more sustainable by making food on the premises.”
