RESIDENTS in a quiet Blackburn street were woken by a car fire last night.

Firefighters were called to Cheetham Street in Wensley Fold shortly after midnight to find a Volkswagon Golf had been set alight by vandals.

Neighbouring residents got up to watch as fire crews tackled the flames, which completely destroyed the car.

Christine Flannery, who lives on the street, witnessed the incident.

She said: “I was rudely awoken by a huge explosion that rattled the windows up to three streets away.

“Onlookers had to take cover as a series of violent bursts sent glass and debris showering up to 20 metres from the burning car.

“The fire brigade arrived within minutes and extinguished the flames.”

A nearby property was left with damage to the front door because of the intense heat.
