HEALTH bosses have been allowed to increase the size of a temporary overflow car park at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.
Members of the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust applied to Blackburn with Darwen Council for permission to up the usage of the brownfield former site of the maternity and physiotherapy wards from 1,777 spaces to 2,017.
Of those spaces, 139 will be designated for disabled access, 44 for motorbikes, and 53 for bicycles.
The temporary car park, which is made up of loose stone chippings, is to the north of the main hospital building.
It was first used in its present form in 2009.
The hospital buildings on the site were demolished in 2001.
The car park will be used seven days per week from 8am to 8pm.
