A MAYOR will be putting the kettle on in a world record attempt for a cancer charity’s flagship fundraiser.

The Mayor of Hyndburn, Coun Colette McCormack, will raise a mug and attempt to break the record of attending most coffee mornings in one day.

She will be raising cash for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is ‘close to her heart’ as her sister-in-law, Deirdre Watton, was cared for by Macmillan nurses.

Ms Watton, 62, who worked at Rossendale General Hospital for more than 37 years, died in June after a four-week battle with ovarian cancer.

Coun McCormack is aiming to attend 21 coffee mornings, breaking last year’s record, set by the Town Mayor of Knutsford, Peter Coan, who visited 16.

The event will take place on September 30 to coincide with the 21st anniversary of the World’S Biggest Coffee Morning event.

Coun McCormack, said: “Macmillan do a wonderful job and we witnessed this first hand when they were looking after Deirdre. She was a very special person and she will be missed dearly.

“We want to break the record to raise as much money as possible and we need to find at least 21 coffee mornings being held locally.
