CAMPAIGNERS are urging swimmers to make their voices heard ahead of a vital debate on the future of Haslingden’s pool.

Residents have reacted angrily to suggestions the £3.2million, originally earmarked for a new baths for the town, could be diverted to pay for the redevelopment of Rawtenstall’s Valley Centre.

The existing Haslingden Pool, in East Bank Avenue, dates back to the 1930s and is in urgent need of overhauling.

Originally, the proposal had been to build a pool extension at the town’s sports centre, alongside an upgrade for Rawtenstall’s Marl Pits complex.

But these proposals have gone back to the drawing board and town hall bosses are reassessing spending plans.

Now, with a council meeting looming at the end of the month to possibly resolve the matter, pool supporters are stepping up their efforts.

Ray Sutcliffe, of Rydal Avenue, Haslingden, said: “There are countless people who owe their lives to the swimming pools.

“Not just directly from children who learn to swim, but the diving clubs, the safety instructors, and those elderly residents whose trip to the swimming pool provides a necessary health benefit in an increasingly financially difficult environment for all.”

He has written to all councillors, pleading with them to reconsider the new pool proposals.

Opposition Conservative councillors have also questioned why the funding is being diverted.

Council leader Coun Alyson Barnes has called for a period of reflection on the Valley’s spending priorities.
