MANAGEMENT at a historic paper mill which is set to close have met with unions to negotiate redundancy packages.

More than 100 jobs will be axed as the DS Smith Paper at Hollins Mill, Hollins Road, Darwen, closes by October 2012.

The move will end production at a site that has manufactured paper since 1845.

It will make 116 employees redundant.

The Darwen mill produces white top testliner paper which is used to manufacture packaging.

It has undertaken a ‘detailed review of the business’ but had to close Hollins Mill because of the increasing cost of raw materials.

Manager Graham Plummer said: “We are still right in the middle of the 90-day consultation process, which is due to finish at the end of September.

"It won’t be until then that we come to an agreement with the workforce.

DS Smith will concentrate production at its plants, in Devon, Kent and Somerset.
