A BURNLEY speed camera has netted £107,000 – and it’s the second most prolific in Lancashire.

The camera flashed 1,901 drivers who broke the 30mph limit along Rossendale Road in the past 12 months.

At £65 a fine, this generated £50,000 from 850 motorists.

And another 677 forked out £57,000 to pay for speed awareness courses to avoid points on their licence.

People living near the camera, opposite the Farrington Road industrial estate, were not surprised that the device had caught out so many motorists.

They said the A646 road was wider than normal and it used to be a 40mph limit before work started on Hameldon College a few years ago.

Terry Fletcher, of Rossendale Road, said: “This used to be a 40mph road a few years ago and I don’t know whether people realise it has become 30mph.

“We’ve had plenty of people out here measuring the road, looking like they were thinking of challenging their ticket.

“There used to be a number of accidents along here and the tree outside our house was hit a number of times.

"They had to take it away eventually.”

Hilda Evans, 64, another resident, said: “There is still a lot of traffic speeding down here – I don’t think the camera has had any effect really.”

Alan Tonnacliffe, 39, a delivery driver, said: “It’s a bit of a surprise because it’s on a hill and you wouldn’t think people could get much speed up.

“But if it’s helped to slow people down then I’m for it.”
