Three men scale Darwen 279ft mill in dead of night

THREE men put their lives at risk by scaling a 279ft chimney for kicks in the dead of night.

Their ascent of Darwen’s India Mill was carried out with few safety precautions.

They weren’t wearing helmets, were only roped together on the ladders fixed to the side of the mill and part of their stunt involved ‘free climbing’.

Last night the group was condemned as reckless with one councillor saying they should be facing a jail sentence.

But the men insisted they were not ‘teenage, drunken vandals’, and said they carried out detailed preparations.

They call themselves urban explorers, a term describing people who examine off-limits urban areas or industrial facilities.

After spotting ladders had been installed up the 279ft chimney for safety checks, the men decided to realise their ambition of scaling one of East Lancashire’s tallest landmarks.

They went to the site in darkness in the early hours so they couldn’t be spotted.

The only precaution they appear to have taken was attaching a rope to each other.

They did not wear helmets.

During their terrifying ascent, the men took pictures which they later posted on an urban explorers website where they outlined their adventure.

By the time they got to the bottom of the chimney an hour later they had been spotted.

Police gave chase as the last man climbed down, but were not able to catch him or the others.

Officers said the men could be sued for trespass, which would be a civil claim taken up by the property owner, or prosecuted for a common law breach of the peace, which is an arrestable offence, for putting their own safety in danger.

PC Phil Hambley said: “There is a history of people trying to climb the chimney for fun, but this is incredibly dangerous.”

Darwen MP Jake Berry said their actions were ‘absolutely ludicrous’.

He said: “This links to the Jackass culture. While I’m no killjoy, I think needlessly putting your life in danger, and the lives of people who may be called to rescue you, is completely irresponsible.”

Town mayor councillor Paul Browne said: “They are not welcome in this town.

"If it were up to me, they’d get a hell of a long jail sentence.”

Brian Foxton of Vine Property Management, which runs the India Mill Centre, said the ladders had only been put up as a temporary measure, and security measures were now being looked at.

He said: “It a dangerous thing to do and we don’t condone it.”

The individuals involved have not been identified, but agreed to communicate with the Lancashire Telegraph through email.

One of the men, who would only refer to himself as Ojay, said: “Unfortunately 'urban explorers' are always branded as reckless and irresponsible.

“It’s frustrating as we have utmost respect for an operating system and the buildings and structures we climb.

“Obviously we take precautions and use proper climbing/fall arrest equipment as a safety measure.”

Writing on internet forum, Ojay went into detail about the climb.

He said: “I heard ladders were in place.

“No messing about here, we had a small window of opportunity.

“I shot up the ladders without a care in the world.

"As I hit the first overhang, suddenly the rope started to stretch.

"I couldn't pass the deviation between the connecting ladders so literally had to un-clip and free climb back down a good 40ft to the ledge below.”

Telling of reaching the top, he added: “There was a genuine buzz as we carried on up the ladders one-by-one towards the summit.

"The sun was rising, I hadn't slept. Full of mixed emotions, we made it back down safely, bitten to death by midges."

The men said they made it to the point where the late Bolton steeplejack Fred Dibnah had carved his name near the lightning conductor in 1991 before climbing back down the ladder.

Our Mayor and our MP just don't get it.

These guys aren't "idiots". You can't be an idiot an climb India Mill chimney. They will have done their own risk-assessment and concluded that they had the necessary strength, skill and nerve to get to the top.

Good find happy, I will have agood look at that tonight.

this is ace, i saw some guy just last week at the top, a worker. apparently he had been swinging out on his rope just for a laugh!

these councillors are out of touch. for god sake, things like this is good! ok, if it was some p155ed up idiot like we've had before, fair enough, but clearly these guys are expert climbers and it could put darwen on the map.

I once watched a program about some french guy who tight roped across the twin towers years ago. before he did that, the buildings were almost empty and no one wanted to rent any spaces there. they weren't the iconic buildings they became until he did that..

tell you what though, just the thought of climbing that building makes me feel dizzy!! :)

There is no harm in this as far as i can see, the blinkered need to get their head out of the health and safety sandpit!

they stole nothing, hurt no-one and that is refreshing.
-
Yes they did something that could have required emergency services, so what?
-
we all, without exception, do things everyday that could result in our needing them too, I am a biker, every journey is statistically high risk, should I be vilified too? made too stop?

As for Paul Browne suggesting that the lads should "get a hell of a long jail sentence.”, well it is a victory for common sense that pillocks like him do not decide who goes to jail and who doesn't.

Congratulations Cathering Pye, you have proved your ability to write absolute twaddle. You just need to hack into a couple of dead kids' phones and you can guarantee yourself an excellent and profitable career in journalism. Good luck to you.

I for one am a big fan of the Urbex movement - people need challenges to conquer and things to discover and IMO if they aren't doing any damage, they aren't doing any harm.

Clearly you can see that the guys have harnesses on and are clipped on as would the steeplejacks that go up there. Granted on the helmet issue one is wearing one but thats not going to detract from the climb as these guys are very experienced climbers and used to heights. As to the mayor not wanting these guys back why would they want to go back as they have just nailed your chimney! :0)

Paul - do you seriously believe you will encourage anyone to climb it from a report? do you believe in the way you and the councillors have now stopped people from wanting to do this?

.

Either way, you have given these guys huge local coverage. is this story running on the front page of the paper?

.

So what if some idiotic councillors say 'you're not welcome back in Darwen' and they should be sent down!!

.

Is that really going to prevent someone from doing this? just read the reactions above....

.

I for one, as with the majority, think is is a great story and it should have been portrayed as such. Look at the coverage Alain Robert gets, Phillipe Petit who i mentioned earlier and what about the nations obsession with parkour?

.

I love watching and reading about these things, in a positive light, how they should be reported. Does that make me want to do it? does it balls, cos i dont have the balls to do it.

.

If it encourages the next group of people who have the skill and the courage to do it - then go for it - where's the harm in that?

.

Condeming it in the way the councillor and MP have, well that makes them looking like the boring old stiffs that they are...

The LT comment/opinion doesn't seem to quite 'get it' either, calling it an "exhibitionist stunt", saying that there are plenty of climbing walls and natural peaks that can be scaled sensibly, and lamenting that their initiative and daring isn't channelled into something more worthwhile like a fundraising effort.

These guys are way beyond climbing walls and sensible walks in the Lake District, and whilst fundraising is always a good thing, there's rarely any danger with an organised fundraising event and they're not as newsworthy as the LT might imagine.

This is a good front page story with drama, danger, a bit of mischievousness, no harm done, and the making of a couple of local heroes. The LT should have just reported it and enjoyed the exposure without moralising.

I do admire these people for doing something most of us are too scared to do, BUT- The steeplejacks had to spend a few hours checking all their equipment in case it was damaged or sabotaged as they didn't know who had gone up. It would be nice if these climbers would pay for this lost time.
Also, if one had fallen to his death I am sure his family would be suing the owners. That is why it was reckless and done without consideration for other people. I still admire the climb though!!
As for the police giving chase, I believe no-one at the mill has been contacted by the police on this matter. Did the chase happen? Could the reporter, editor, police or manager confirm this please, thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean here? Yes, it is inconsiderate in terms of the bods supposed to be securing the place getting their butts kicked if one of these guys had fallen off I agree. BUT you have to understand people who climb. They do it because the monument/mountain or whatever is there and they can! No other reason other than man versus challenge. These guys have to climb, it's what life is about for them. They will wait days even weeks for the right weather conditions etc and make their move when they can. In this case they saw an open opportunity which may never come round again and they went for it. How do you think they feel this morning? Guilty because they caused all this fuss? Sorry because they put lives at risk? NO - they feel fulfilled and exhilirated. Ask anybody who works for Mountain Rescue, there are folk out walking completely unprepared and heading for disaster before they even set off. These climbers are not in that category, they are some of this country's top guys, you would watch them on the TV and be glued to the set and think they were amazing. Nobody got hurt, yes I agree it is a crazy thing to do but these guys were born to be crazy.

In response to some of the above - I'm pretty sure there were no police involved. The police comment, they do not mention anything about a chase.

Further, why would the climbers knock there own pitons into the brickwork why they can use the ladder? Hammering pitons is noisy and unsafe to do at night. The climbers would have clipped onto the safety line running along it. This is standard rigging.

Further, the police would have to find someone who would testify that there peace was broken. Is that likely? Its rubbish.

And lastly, shame on you Catherine for writing for drivel. With poor journalism like that, mabe you should a job for Mr Murdoch.

It doesn't say very much for the Darwen Police does it, 3 climbers climb a 279ft chimney, then descend a 279ft chimney (so thats a total ascend and descend of 558ft)

At the end of their descend, the police arrive (probably in a car) and give chase to these climbers, who I very much doubt would be at their peak performance after such an exercise!

Do the police train after they have taken their fitness test? or do they not bother to go to the gym?

It really does make you think, if they can't catch explorers who have just climbed a total of 558ft, then how are they expected to catch a common criminal?

Is that not more of an immediate threat to the local community?

Utmost respect to the guys who did this; they knew the risks and took adequate precautions so don’t see how they put their lives at risk?

If the Lancashire Telegraph wants to see people who put their lives at risk why not report on people who still smoke 60 a day, down 8 pints a night or survive of a diet of fast food and no exercise?

These guys did nothing to effect the everyday life of anyone in Darwen, the only possible inconvenience was to the steeplejacks who had to check their equipment on the way up, something they have do everyday anyway.

At least Catherine Pye had something more to write about than usual – (Facebook) “I write about people who keep sheep in their living rooms” I wonder why she get such top-notch stories; or is this just her thoughts about people who live in Darwen!

Could anything be portrayed in a positive light by this paper where Darwen is concerned... i think not!!
Do you (and others) believe the Lancashire Telegraph, the MP and local councillors should encourage people to climb up India Mill's tower then?
I think they should put a lift up the side and charge £20 a time to go up. The Council could make thousands. Put my name down first, always wanted to go up there but obviously not managed it, but been inside it. That first step back of the top to the ladder really gets you. WELL DONE I say and fingers to the stiff necked nobody's. fact-okay password and very true

what a lazy, ill researched, sensationalised article by a third rate reporter - well suited to the local target audience obviously, stuffed with pointless comments from self-serving politicians and 'public service' employees for whom any publicity that mentions their name is thought to be a good thing. Mainly though - such low standards of 'reporting' - career deserves to fester in local rags

I don't think I have ever seen as many postings before in the LT over an article, most of them in support of these climbers and against the childishly silly responses from the likes of Jake Berry and Paul Browne. After all, is not this sort of adventurous spirit the same as that which discovered far away countries, sailed uncharted seas and trecked to the poles? Well done! One in the eye for the PC nanny state! And not a high visibility vest in sight!!

The story has not been edited at all.

Nickcuk - there is no need for personal abuse. Criticise the newspaper or the article by all means but please try to avoid being personal.

It can't be that 'lazy' and 'ill-researched' if the reporter has spoken to the climbers, the mill's owner, the police, the mayor and the MP at the very least.

I'll ask again: What should the MP, mayor and local newspaper do - encourage any reader to have a go at climbing up mill chimneys?

Yes, the doughnut munchers giving chase must have been exceedingly slow if these experienced climbers had time to pack their ropes and tackle and pose for tourist pics at the bottom. Next time fellas, it would be amusing if you taped a pre-written general risk assessment for scaling big things in the dark to their ladders. I think it would urinate on their incinerator somewhat.

There was no chase or police presence.
I am still waiting for someone to tell me why the "chase" was in the report.

what does this have to do with the council or the police?
.
council stick to litter picking and removing our waste, coppers stick to playing cards and xbox in the station, unless there is a breech of the peace from the councillors commenting on fun...
.
groovy work fellas get the vid on youtube so we can look at another town without employment from on high
