A FATHER-of-three who went on the rampage at a Colne service station with a hammer and baseball bat claimed his drinks may have been spiked, a court heard.

Before he was arrested by police, Terrence Graham, 30, smashed window at the Total garage in North Valley Road and damaged a petrol pump, traffic-light box and CCTV camera, Burnley magistrates were told.

And when he was detained in a police van, he indecently exposed himself to a special constable, the court heard.

But defence solicitor John Rusius told magistrates his client’s behaviour was ‘so bizarre’ he was convinced his drinks had been interfered with.

Prosecutor Enda Geldard said sales assistant Simon Gill was working at the garage at about 8pm on Friday, February 11, when he saw Graham coming towards a serving hatch, armed with the bat and hammer.

He shattered the glass with the hammer, causing £1,000 damage, before he attacked the nozzle of one of the petrol pumps.

Mr Gill, who had called the police, then heard Graham attacking a nearby traffic-light box and CCTV post.

He was eventually arrested and put in the back of a police van, where he continued to be aggressive, causing the vehicle to rock.

The court heard that Graham could be heard shouting: “I will admit to the damage but just let me out.”

Mr Rusius, defending, said Graham regretted his actions and the only explanation he could give was that his drink had probably been ‘spiked’.

Graham, of Birtwistle Avenue, Colne, admitted three offences of criminal damage and was jailed for six weeks.

He was conditonally discharged for 12 months on the exposure charge.
