BLACKBURN’S Matt Griffin was back behind the wheel of the Rallyschool VW Lupo last weekend as, together with co-driver Joe Cruttenden, he contested the Dukeries Rally run over nine stages in Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Forest.

With their BTRDA 1400L and English Junior Rally Championship aspirations having suffered owing to clutch failure on last month’s Plains Rally their plan was to finish and secure a good points haul.

It all went to plan as they finished third behind two Lupos not registered for championship points allowing Griffin and Cruttenden to bag a maximum allocation.

Griffin, who recently completed a BSc degree course in Motorsport Logistics and Management at Myerscough College, now has to decide on his next event.

He said: “I may risk missing the next BTRDA round, the Quinton, to do a tarmac event possibly the Harry Flatters or the Tyneside Stages which both run on the July 31.

Last year when I went for the John Easson Award I was told I should get some tarmac experience so as the Quinton isn’t an English Rally Championship round I may take the risk.”
