A MAJOR new 10-month art project which depicts life in Burnley has been launched in the town.

But the abstract art may leave some visitors confused about the subject matter.

The Arts Council project kicks off at Towneley Hall with a sculpture designed to symbolise a Saturday night out in the town centre.

Titled ‘Hammerton Street Saturday Night’, the illuminated sculpture is said to have been inspired by drinks displays and bar queues.

It features an illuminated base with glass cyclinders placed closely together on top.

It has been designed to attract new visitors to the hall and become a talking point in the town.

It is the first in a series of seven sculptures being exhibited in the Burnley Room, at the 15th Century stately home, between now and March next year.

Each will be designed by artist team Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio, and will reflect an aspect of life in the town.

The ‘Hammerton Street Saturday Night’ piece also makes use of rarely-seen items from Towneley Hall’s collections.

Simon said: “A Saturday night out seems to be a big part of life in Burnley for loads of people.

“It’s a very different vibe to Manchester, or Blackburn, with a fast turnover of venues and styles.

“Saturday night out in Burnley is also set in a heritage landscape, so the past and present are face to face in the centre of town. Our new sculpture is worth a look because we can guarantee that you’ll catch a glimpse of Burnley’s unique nightlife, right there in Towneley Hall.”

The exhibition has been organised by Creativity Works and is part of the ReVisit programme, which is funded by Arts Council England, Renaissance and Towneley Hall.

It will see seven new sculptures shown in six-week cycles.

It is on display until July 1, when it will be replaced with the second sculpture.
