POLICE officers in Lancashire could be asked to learn from home in a bid to cut the force’s £5million pound training budget.

The force has to save £42m over the next four years and an organisat-ional review of the way training is delivered has ruled that the majority of training will now be done in divisions rather than at headquarters.

Other recommendations include collaborating with other north west forces in areas such as driving and firearms to create a uniform approach to police tactics and bring down costs.

Lancashire Police said implementing e-learning was an objective for 2011/12 to try and strengthen its learning and development for staff whilst dealing with a significant reduction in budget.

It is aimed particularly, but not exclusively at, specials and volunteers.

The force said it has used e-learning systems only accessible from constabulary computers and is looking into providing online learning accessible from home.

But it was only in ‘embryonic form’ and early consultations were still ongoing.

A police spokesman said: “E-learning is flexible, it allows the learner to set the pace at which they progress and provides easy access to materials to refresh and review learning.”
