AN AUTISTIC boy will receive specialist equipment thanks to a fundraising football match organised by the police.

Four-year-old Harrison Boyle, from Clayton-le-Moors, has different needs from most boys his age to help communicate and interact with people.

His father Louis Boyle is a serving sergeant in Blackburn and was stunned when his colleagues arranged the event.

The 11-a-side game was organised by colleague PC Dean Briggs and raised £420.

PC Briggs, who is a community beat manager in Darwen, said: “We decided to organise this match after colleagues heard about Harrison.

“My wife has previous experience of working with children with autism and we felt that this was a very worthwhile cause.

“It was great to see officers get behind this and support it along with the local community such as Darwen Football Club who provided the facilities at no cost and residents who provided donations.”

Sgt Boyle said: “Harrison was diagnosed with autism when he was two. He goes to a special school and has different needs to other children of his age as his ability to communicate and understand social situations is limited.

“The sensory equipment will help to stimulate his interaction and understanding of the world around him.

“My wife and I are shocked and touched by this thoughtful gesture.

“On behalf of my family I would like to thank all the police officers who supported this event – thanks so much to you all.”

The football match took place at Darwen’s Anchor Ground.
