PRINCE William is being asked to ensure a famous former sports ground in Pendle secures a royal appointment.

Plans are being drawn up to nominate the old Lucas sports ground, behind Reedley Magistrates Court, as a Queen Elizabeth II field.

And William, the newly-installed Duke of Cambridge, has been given the job of leading the project, which aims to safeguards hundreds of recreation spaces for future generations.

The scheme coincides with the London 2012 Olympics and celebrations for the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Planning permission has been given for 14 homes on part of the old Lucas ground, which was used by generations of workers associated with the aerospace firm.

But a substantial portion of the field will be preserved and benefit from a sports pavilion, cricket oval and football pitch.

Council bosses are working with Nelson-based Barnfield Construction on the ambitious scheme.

Parks manager Colin Patten said: “This gives us a fantastic opportunity to be part of a high-profile national campaign which will have a real impact in Pendle.

“It’s not only a cost effective way to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics but will mean the field is protected forever.”

Town hall chiefs will seek public support for the venture later this year.

Philip Mousdale, the council’s services director, said: “This is a fantastic scheme. Protecting our outdoor spaces is a great way to mark one of the greatest sporting events.

“And it means that communities will have access to places for both physical activity and relaxation, which is hugely important.”
