A PRESTIGIOUS award in memory of an inspirational cancer victim will have special meaning for Pendle’s MP.

For Andrew Stephenson was taught chemistry by the late Patsy Calton before he entered the world of politics.

Now the Pendle MP has been nominated for the gong set up in her memory by Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The award recognises the outstanding work by parliamentarians campaigning to improve the lives of people affected by breast cancer.

Patsy Calton was Liberal Democrat MP for Cheadle in Stockport.

She died in 2005 after a brave eight year battle against breast cancer. She was just 57.

Before she became a politician, she taught chemistry in comprehensive schools in Manchester and Cheshire.

In June 2001 she left teaching for Parliament, her last school being Poynton High School, where she was head of chemistry.

Former Poynton pupil Mr Stephenson said: “I am very honoured to have been nominated. Patsy inspired me to go into politics.

“I have very fond memories of her as a teacher and remember the huge amount of work she did to help those affected by breast cancer.

“I feel very humbled to have been nominated for an award named in her memory.”

He was nominated by one of his constituents, Mary Brennan, who helped set up the Barnoldswick and Earby Bosom Friends Group.

The winner will be announced on Monday, June 20.
