BLACKBURN Rovers manager Steve Kean yesterday arrived back in England after a meeting with owners Venky’s in India following his drink drive charge.

The Lancashire Telegraph understand the talks had been scheduled before Kean’s arrest on Saturday night.

Both Venky’s and Rovers chiefs declined to comment on the arrest or what was on the agenda of the meeting.

Kean, who flew out to India on Sunday and arrived back yesterday afternoon, could not be contacted for comment.

But club sources last night said the manager and team were ‘fully focused’ on Sunday’s crucial clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kean had begun to win over the fans after a return to form following a 11-game winless run.

But yesterday as details of his arrest emerged, internet message boards were inundated with messages calling for Kean to resign or be sacked.

Kean was held by Cheshire Police on Saturday night, hours after a 1-1 draw which saw opponents Manchester United clinch the title.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that Kean’s arrest was the result of a routine stop check by police.

He was stopped in his Mercedes on the M6 southbound around 8.50pm, between junction 18 and 19 in Cheshire.

Police said the 43-year-old provided a positive breath test at the roadside.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands Kean was released in the early hours of Sunday morning and did not spend the night in custody.

Kean was subsequently charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

He has been bailed until June 7 when he will appear before Crewe magistrates.

Earlier in the week, Kean had spoken about the Manchester United game, saying he was likely to share a glass of wine with Alex Ferguson after the match.

Rovers’ record goalscorer, Simon Garner, said the controversy would not affect the current players’ performances next weekend.

Garner said: “They will just get on with the job they've got to do.

“They will take the mickey out of him if anything.

“Things happen in football, when you're on a bad run things come out in the papers and it seems the world is against you, but they have to ignore it because the next game is too important.”
