CAMPAIGNERS in Whalley protesting about housing plans raised more than £3,500 during an auction.

The Save Whalley Village group is raising cash for experts to fight developments “threatening the countryside around the village”.

More than 350 ‘lots’ were up for grabs at the auction, in the Whalley Methodists Hall, in King Street, with around 200 people queuing as far as Chapel Rise to get in.

Valuable items included three vintage hats donated by local businesswoman Hilary Cookson which fetched £100 each, and a box of glass ornaments went for £75.

Mike Harper, spokesman for the group, said: “The money we raised will be invaluable in putting together a strong case against the developers.

"We need to commission experts who are able to testify to the damage these applications will do to our village.

“And, most importantly, the success of the auction reveals the strength of support for our campaign.”
