A MAN armed himself with a machete and knife during a siege in Blackburn.

Scott Haworth locked himself in his partner’s home with their 22-month-old child and brandished the weapons as police tried to negotiate an end to the stand-off.

He had earlier subjected his partner to what a District Judge described as a “sustained and savage” attack.

Haworth, of Hollin Bridge Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to assaulting Jennifer Smith, affray and criminal damage following the siege on Thursday.

He was committed in custody to Preston Crown Court for sentence.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, told Blackburn magistrates that during the attack on Miss Smith she was punched, kicked and had her head smashed against the floor.

She eventually escaped and ran to her mother’s home covered in blood and screaming for her to get the child.

Haworth locked the doors and refused to hand over the youngster.

“Police, including armed response officers, were deployed and there was a siege situation which lasted for about one and a half hours,” said Miss Allan.

She said officers could see him pacing up and down with a large knife in his hand and he said if they tried to come in he would resist with violence.

He then armed himself with a machete.

“He said his ex-partner had treated him badly and he had no choice,” said Miss Allan.

“It was eventually agreed that if he put the weapons down and went and said goodbye to his son he would simply be arrested as he left the house.”

Colleen Dickinson-Jones, defending, said Haworth never had any intention of using the weapons.
