AN investigation has been launched into a suspected arson attack behind a former police station in Pendle this morning.

Firefighters from Nelson spent three hours tackling the blaze, in an annexe behind the old constabulary building, off Portland Street, Barrowford.

The alarm was raised around 2.20am by neighbours of the complex, off Gisburn Road.

Firefighters believe someone broke into the building and set a fire inside, and police have confirmed they are investigating the incident as possible arson.

Parish council chairman Coun John Pope said the building had not been used by the police for more than 30 years.

Youths did target the area last year, congregating behind the landmark, but problems appeared to have eased in recent months.

Coun Pope added: “There was a school application there around five years ago and the property has been placed up for auction before now.

"They are obviously having difficulties finding a use for it.”

Auctioneers Pugh and Company withdrew the site from a February sale and the building is still available as offices.

Under Barrowford Parish Council plans, a replacement police office could be established at nearby Holmefield House, to provide a base for community bobbies.
