A convict who went on the run after climbing out of the skylight of a prison van in Lancashire has been arrested.

Police warned the public not to approach John Paul Williams, who was serving an indeterminate sentence for robbery, after the incident in Burscough on Wednesday May 4.

Williams, 35, who formerly lived at various addresses in Greater Manchester, was with three other prisoners in a Prison Service van.

They were on the A59 in Burscough, being taken from HMP Garth to different prisons on Merseyside, when three of them escaped through the skylights in their individual cells of the prison van.

Two were quickly caught but William managed to evade the authorities and was later spotted on CCTV on a bus in Manchester.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police are now no longer looking for John Paul Williams, who escaped from a prison van in Lancashire last week.

"He was arrested last night and remains in custody for questioning."
