VETERAN footballers are set to line up for a benefit match in aid of former Clarets hero Gary Parkinson.

The ex-Burnley right-back earned a place in the Turf Moor faithfuls’ hearts when he scored the goal which helped earn promotion in 1993-94.

But the 42-year-old was also a legend for Middlesbrough, starring in the mid-80s side which earned back-to-back promotions.

He is recovering after suffering a severe stroke last September and specialist equipment is needed to help him communicate.

Team mates who graced Ayresome Park alongside Gary, like Bernie Slaven, Colin Cooper, Stuart Ripley and Paul Kerr, will feature in the May 15 charity game.

Other favourites such as Marlon Beresford, Craig Hignett, Dean Windass, Curtis Fleming, Steve Vickers and Jason Euell will turn out at the club’s current home, the Riverside Stadium, for the fundraiser.

Gary’s son Luke will play in the game, which is on the day before his 21st birthday, wearing his dad’s number two shirt.

The past players’ associations for both Burnley and Blackpool, another former club, have already contributed thousands of pounds to Gary’s relief fund.
