A YOUNG mother was attacked while pushing her five-month-old daughter in her pram in Nelson.

Police said the 24-year-old woman was punched twice in the face and fell to the floor where she was kicked in the head.

She suffered a bloodied nose and cut lip and was treated by paramedics.

Several motorists are known to have helped out the victim, who was attacked in Reedyford Road on Friday between 1pm and 1.30pm.

Police are now urging the drivers to come forward with information about the attack, which happened between Cumberland Street and Leeds Road.

Before she was attacked, the woman heard someone shouting to her. She turned around and was punched in the face. The offender then punched her again before she fell over.

Pc Michael Godkin, the Nelson response officer who is investigating the incident, said: “I would urge anybody who witnessed this assault to come forward.

“We know at least three vehicles stopped to help the victim but unfortunately they did not phone in or leave their details so I would urge those people to contact police as they could be vital witnesses.”

An 18-year-old woman and 30-year-old woman from Nelson have both been arrested on suspicion of section 47 assault and are on bail pending further enquires.
