A POP concert is to take place on top of Pendle Hill to raise money towards a new £500,000 base for a mountain rescue team.

Members of Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team (RPMRT) also want 1,000 people to dress up as witches for the gig.

The concert, scheduled to take place on Saturday June 11, will feature a yet-to-be-named local band.

The volunteers, who are raising half a million pounds to pay for a new base in Haslingden, are asking everyone who attends to raise £100 in sponsorship.

Alwyn Hayes, who has been a member of the team for two years, came up with the idea after hearing about a concert at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro last year.

The 54-year-old, of Great Harwood, said: “One of our members, who is a paramedic, worked at the concert at the top of Kilimanjaro, so I thought ‘why can’t we do the highest concert in Lancashire?’ I certainly can’t think of any higher that have taken place.”

The RPMRT is made up of volunteers and has to raise up to £30,000 a year to meet running costs.

Everyone who signs up for the ‘Pendle 1,000’ event will have to pay £15, although they will be reimbursed for that amount if they raise £100 in sponsorship.
