HYNDBURN’S oldest resident will be handing out certificates at a charity walk this weekend.

Alice Horne, 104, will be at the finishing line on Sunday for the sixth annual walk, organised by the Rotary Club of Church and Oswaldtwistle.

Mayor Malcolm Pritchard and council leader Peter Britclife will also be at the event.

Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh will be walking the full seven-mile route.

The walk starts at Junction Seven Business Park off the M65, followed by four miles on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and three miles in the surrounding countryside.

The route finishes back at the starting point.

For the first time, there will also be a walking 15-piece band, the Blow Jangles.

And a troop of cheerleaders will be going. Walkers are encouraged to don fancy dress for the day, and cash prizes will be given to the best costumes.

Rotary chairman Ron Pickup said that he hoped sponsorship for the walkers would match last year’s total of £50,000.

Some £250,000 has been raised for local and national charities since it began five years ago.

Registration costs £5 on the day.
