PLANS for Burnley’s Race For Life have had to be scaled back after disappointing numbers forced organisers to hold one, rather than two events.

Participants were scheduled to take part in either a charity run at 11am, or another at 2.30pm, at Towneley Park, on Sunday, May 15.

But Cancer Research UK has announced that only the morning event will now take place due to a limited uptake of places.

Last year around 1,700 runners, joggers, walkers, and pram-pushers tackled the 5km course, and the charity had hoped to raise more than £189,000 for its ground-breaking research later this month.

A Cancer Research UK spokesman said: “Unfortunately we have had to cancel. If you have already entered this event, we will be in touch soon.”

The charity said it was contacting women who had already signed up for the afternoon event, sponsored by Tesco, to let them know about the changes which, it said, would help reduce event management costs.

Anyone who is unable to make the new time will be able to transfer to another Race for Life event.

Cancer Research UK is entirely funded by the public and needs support to continue to make progress and give hope to people affected by cancer.
