COUNCILLORS in Hapton are calling for the speed limit on a main road through the village to be slashed.

The A679, which runs from the edge of Burnley through Hapton and towards Hyndburn, currently has four speed limit changes in a stretch of less than two miles, with the limit varying from 30mph to 60mph.

Highways chiefs at Lancashire County Council are considering reducing the 60mph stretches to 50mph, but members of Hapton Parish Council believe it would be easier if it was reduced to 40mph.

Coun Christine Pucket-Goulden, chairman of Hapton Parish Council, said: “You’ve got three of four limit changes in just a mile and a bit, which just doesn’t make sense.

“If it was changed to 30mph through the village and then 40mph either side it would be a bit more coherent and easier for drivers.

“At the moment there are stretches of a few hundred yards that are 60mph which seems a bit daft.

“It is very confusing, especially for drivers who are from out of town and use the road as a main access road into Burnley.

“There is no benefit to having the 60mph stretches, so hopefully it can be reduced.”

The speed limit between Rosegrove and Network 65 is 40 mph which increases to 60mph until the Agra Indian Restaurant. The road than has a 30mph limit through the village, which then turns to 60mph until the Accrington roundabout.

Councillors made their points to highways officers Duncan Reeve, who attended a recent parish council meeting.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We have received feedback on our proposals from Lancashire County Council.

“We will be considering what they have said in the usual way, and a report will be put forward in the next few weeks.”
