CAMPAIGNERS who have protested against bus cuts in their area are set for a partial reprieve.

Yesterday a 600-signature petition was handed over at Blackburn town hall, from people in Lammack who have been facing the cancellation of three bus services because of budget cuts.

But at the same time a new route has been unveiled that will come into operation on May 9, the day after the current services expire.

Run by Darwen Coach Services, it will cover an hourly circular route from Blackburn town centre via Wensley Road, Preston New Road, Beardwood, Whinney Lane, Lammack Road, Shear Brow and Limbrick.

The new route will be the Number 10.

The decision by Lancashire United to change the route of the number 9 and cut the 13 service had sparked strong opposition, with residents claiming elderly people would be ‘cut off’ with no access to public transport.

The new route, which will initially only run in one direction, means a reduced service, from 9.20am to 5.20pm.

Council leader Kate Hollern said: “It’s not ideal, but it’s good news.”

Ward councillor Mike Lee added: “This will give people the opportunity to get out and about.”
