BURNLEY band You Animals are hoping to take the music scene by storm when they release their debut album in April. Guitarist Stuart Samuels shared his hopes for pop stardom.

You Animals has six members coming from Burnley and Derby. How did you all meet?

Well Martin is my twin brother. I met Ryan in a bar I was working at; we bonded over our love of Suede (the band, not the fabric!) and the three of us started playing some small gigs together. We eventually found Matt and Mark and stole them from the other bands. Liza is a mystery, I honestly have no idea where she’s came from or how she ended up in the band. She plays all the important bits though, so I'm glad we found her.

Where did the name come from?

It’s what my mum used to shout at me and Martin when we were fighting: “Stop it, you animals!”

Describe your sound.

Schizophrenic noisy pop.

Who are your musical inspirations?

For me personally I’d say The Smiths or Joy Division. As for the others I’d say The Strokes, Radiohead, Longpigs, The Cooper Temple Clause, Queens of the Stone Age, Mansun, Pavement, At the Drive in — the list goes on!

Tell us about your debut album, Crimes, Creeps and Thrills?

It's the title of a really old book that someone posted to us.. It’s out over here on the 25th of April through indie label called This Is Fake DIY Records. It came out in Japan last year.

Can you describe the sound of the album?

Its quite eclectic. The tracks are pop songs with a dark heart. The second part of the video for our next single What a Shame, Lorraine was shot partly in Burnley. Me and Martin were both born and grew up in Burnley. Our parents still live there and I'm back most weekends. The area has had a big impact on us and has shaped my views on everything from music to politics. It’s a contradictory place; it’s got some really neglected areas but is surrounded by beautiful countryside.

What has been the highlight of your musical career so far?

Seeing the first copy of album with the finished artwork was fantastic, but nothing beats the feeling of playing a gig when it’s going well.
