A BURNLEY grandma who has dedicated her time to helping people learn computer skills has been honoured.

Christina Grice, 48, has been named South West Burnley's 'Volunteer of the Year' for passing on her IT skills she learned as part of the UK Online initiative.

She was presented with the award by the Mayor of Burnley Coun Tony Lambert and SW Burnley Community Enterprise chairman and former Burnley MP Peter Pike.

The mum-of-two joined the free course at the South West Burnley Community Enterprise Centre, off Rossendale Road, when she was made redundant from a debt collection agency in Rossendale.

Christina, who lives in Coal Clough Lane, decided to carry on as a volunteer at the centre, which has helped more than 200 people attend the drop-in sessions.

She is also a self-employed domestic support worker, helping out people with tasks in and around their own home.

Christine Launder, chief officer at the centre, said: “Christina has been a positive example of how someone can learn new skills and then pass the experience, enthusiasm and knowledge, on to others.

“We were so delighted with her achievements and the help she gives others at the centre, that we have awarded her our ‘volunteer of the year’ title.”

The enterprise centre, in Valley Street, is an independent, not for profit social enterprise.

Free drop-in sessions take place every Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. For further information call the centre on 01282 428499.
