THE rogue riders who tear up moorland around Rossendale and Ramsbottom are being warned that their bikes could be crushed.

People who are caught using scramblers and mini-motos across the South Pennine Moors will face having their prized bikes confiscated and sent to the wrecker’s yard.

Neighbourhood police have dealt with complaints about the machines from Holcombe Moor to Cowpe and Bacup in recent months.

But now Moorwatch has been launched, by campaign group Pennine Prospects, to curb such activities.

Dozens of warning signs are set to be posted on the edge of the moors, which encompass Haslingden, Bacup, Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom, Whitworth and Wateroot.

Supporters are urging walkers, horse riders and cyclists, who use the picturesque moors in their hundreds, to be their eyes and ears.

Steve Westwood, of Natural England, said: “The Moorwatch website reports directly to the relevant authorities and enables us to build up vital evidence.

“It’s had some fantastic feedback and although it was initially set up to tackle illegal off-road activity people are also using it to report fly-tipping and other anti-social behaviour.”

Pam Warhurst, Pennine Prospects chairman, said: “We feel it is very important that the public, many of whom have a great interest and emotional investment in ‘their’ uplands, have a route for raising concerns.”
