A CHARITY football match will pay tribute to an Accrington Stanley terrace legend, with a balloon release and plaque.

Following the death of Oswaldtwistle man and former Tinker and Budget landlord Antony Cox last August, there has been an outpouring of grief from Stanley’s close-knit footballing family.

The 33-year-old, known as the club’s ‘number one fan’, died after he lay on tracks near Church and Oswaldtwistle railway station last August.

Next month the club’s annual charity event, which sees ASFC Legends against Stanley Ultras FC, will also see a moving tribute paid to ‘Coxy’.

Organisers have arranged for terraces to be open for flag and banner displays paying tribute.

A balloon release will take place at half-time.

After the match, the Stanley Ultras will unveil a plaque in his memory, positioned on the left hand side of the Clayton End stand, where Antony stood.

Organiser Katie Blezard, 33, said she and her partner, Kevin Holdroyd, began to plan the tribute after Stanley manager John Coleman came up with the idea.

She said: “John mentioned it shortly after he died and everyone thought it was a good idea.

"Eighty people have already signed up on Facebook and it should be a really good turnout. My partner was a really good friend of Coxy and we knew him through the football, but he was a friend to everyone.

"We’re hoping lots of people come to show their support, in his memory and for a good cause.”

Chairman of Stanley Supporters Rob Russell said: “The Ultras and Legends play every year. This time it is extra special. I think it’s a brilliant idea that will raise money for a good cause, and pay tribute to a wonderful person.”

The Coxy Memorial Charity Cup, at the Crown Ground, takes place on Sunday, May 8, at 6pm, and will be followed by a fundraising charity auction, buffet, disco, and raffle.

All funds raised will go towards causes to be chosen by Antony’s family.
