A PADIHAM baker was left terrified when thieves raided his shop and threatened him with his own rolling pin.

Robert McKenna, 62, owner of Birtwistle's Bakery, Central Buildings, was working at around midnight on Monday when two men banged on the door asking for pies.

Police said Mr McKenna agreed to sell the pies, however, while his back was turned the men stole a chocolate orange gateaux. They then returned 10 minutes later offering to pay for the £8 cake before they grabbed the rolling pin and made threats for money to be handed over from the till.

The men raided the till and stole £64 in cash before making off. Mr McKenna escaped unharmed but was left shocked.

Police investigating the incident said a trail of half-eaten pies and cake were left strewn on the road leading to Ingham Street. Officers at the scene seized the food as evidence.

Burnley Inspector Damian Darcy said: "We are investigating the incident. These men preyed on an elderly man who was going about his business. He has been left shocked by the incident.

"The men may have been boasting about their actions so I would urge anybody with information about this to contact the police so that we can send the offenders to custody."

The first offender is described as 25 years, 5ft 7ins, brown dark hair, clean shaven with distinctive scarring to his knuckles.

The second man is also 5ft 7 ins, slim build, thin face with light mousey hair and a sharp feature nose.
