RESIDENTS in Rossendale are being encouraged to ‘bin off’ their junk mail, particularly from fraudsters and scamsters.

Visitors to STAN, Rossendale Council’s customer services vehicle, will be invited to bin any junk mail, or scam letters, in a special Scamnesty box.

The staff on STAN will help residents to check out any potential scams, and encourage residents to sign up for the Mailing Preference Scheme to significantly reduce the amount of junk mail they receive.

Every visitor to STAN before the end of March will also be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a Wii games console.

Coun Darryl Smith, Rossendale Council customer services portfolio holder, said: “With scams, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

“Scams are popular with criminals because they are very cheap to create and only a small proportion of people need to be taken in for the criminals to start raking in the proceeds,” he added.
