A BID for buskers and street performers to perform on every Accrington town centre street has been launched.

Arts chiefs are inviting buskers, magicians and street performers from far and wide for the one Accrington Alive day to mark the end of an arts project in March.

Project mananger Gayle Knight, who runs the Civic Arts Centre, in Oswaldtwistle, said the event, on Saturday, March 26, would be open to all level of performers, who are being encouraged to get in touch and register.

So far a number of musicians have signed up, but organisers want the invitation to be taken up by as many acts as possible.

Ms Knight said no auditions would be held as they wanted to encourage everybody to take part.

She said: “We are basically giving everybody a chance to take part and encouraging performers to get involved.

“We want Accrington to come alive with as many different types of street artists, and varieties of music as possible.

"If we can put something different on every street corner that would be ideal.”

The performances and live music available on the day will be placed in selected spots around the town centre.

Performances will also be rotated, so each will feature in prime positions, such as Broadway and the entrance to Accrington Market Hall.

The Accrington Alive event is the borough’s finale for the Liberating Empty Terrain arts project launched last August.

Projects included the creation of an arts map of Accrington including ‘favourite places’, the Animated Accy film, which received 3,000 YouTube hits, and ‘flash mob’ spontaneous dancing in Accrington town centre streets.

Interested street performers need to register, and a £100 prize is on offer for the best performer of the day.

All entertainers must register through Gayle Knight at the civic arts centre. Contact info@civicartscentre.co.uk or call 07767 383435.
