THE REFURBISHMENT of a landmark empty pub could lead to the opening of a JD Wetherspoon in Accrington.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands current owners Daniel Thwaites are in negotiations with pub giant Wetherspoon to take over the Regency in Blackburn Road.

The recent closure of the town centre pub, which saw the property boarded up with metal sheeting, has angered councillors who have requested answers regarding its future.

Daniel Thwaites have refused to comment on the plans, while Wetherspoon would only say that it was ‘keen to open a pub in Accrington’.

The company said it could not comment on individual sites at this stage.

Thwaites added it was ‘finalising plans’ which it hoped would see the pub re-open shortly.

Hyndburn Council’s leader said the move would be exciting news for the town centre’s economy.

Coun Peter Britcliffe said: “We have been concerned that this town centre pub should be brought back into use.

“Rumours of JD Wetherspoon coming to Accrington have also been circulating for weeks. If it turns out to be true we would welcome it with open arms.

“It’s a first class organisation, provides food and would be a welcome boost to the economy.”

Ward councillors Paul Barton and Tony Dobson, together with Coun Kath Pratt, initially raised concerns about the future of the pub after metal sheeting was put up making it “an eyesore”.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "We have enjoyed great success nearby in the region and would be keen to open a pub in Accrington. However, we will not comment on individual sites."
