THE breathtaking Pendle countryside will be brought to life in a book of Japanese-style poetry by a writer from Colne and an artist from Brierfield.

‘Curlew on Rain Slack’, Sarah Lee’s first collection of haiku, a 16th century style of Japanese poetry using three lines with 17 syllables, was inspired by the Yorkshire Dales.

But the keen walker said she and illustrator Roy Hubbard were already working on a follow-up, which will focus on scenery closer to home.

Sarah, 46, who is communications manager at Pendle Council, said her mum introduced her to haiku when she was growing up.

She said: “These tiny poems were inspired by many walks in the local countryside.

“Although this first book focuses on the Dales, I’m working on a second collection on Pendle and Yorkshire’s Three Peaks which will feature Weets, Pendle and Boulsworth hills.”

Haiku is usually inspired by nature, and according to Sarah, Roy’s abstract yet natural style fits the Japanese form perfectly, showing reeds in the wind and feathers.

Local people have the chance to take part in a haiku workshop at Colne Bookshop on Saturday, January 15 between 1.30 and 3.30pm, with copies of the new book available.
