THE Attorney General could be set to review the sentence handed to baby-killer Darren Newton after concerns were raised over it being too lenient.

Thirty-two-year-old factory worker Newton, from Earby, was jailed for at least 24 years earlier this month after being convicted of 15-month-old Charlie Hunt’s murder.

Newton, the former boyfriend of the baby’s mother Laura Chapman, filmed himself on his mobile phone repeatedly slapping, prodding and kicking the child while babysitting.

The Attorney General’s office yesterday confirmed they had received a complaint about the sentence not being long enough.

Susequently, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has provided them with information about the case on request.

The Attorney General, Dominic Grieve must now decide whether the sentence was ‘unduly lenient’ and if he deems it so he can ask the Court of Appeal to review it. If the Court of Appeal agrees with the Attorney General it can increase the sentence.

Anyone, including victims, their families, and members of the public can contact the Attorney General's office if they think a sentence is much too light.
