A MAN is in a serious condition in hospital after a crash on the M6 motorway this afternoon.

Police said the accident was believed to have been caused by a flat-bed lorry turning into the path of a HGV travelling in lane one of the southbound M6 at just after 1pm.

The driver of the HGV, who had to be cut free from his vehicle by firefighters, was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.

Motorists faced chaos as both carriageways on the motorway between junction 30 and 29, were closed to allow an air ambulance to land.

The Highways Agency said the accident caused long delays in the area because of the southbound closure.

Trapped traffic was diverted off at junction 30 to join the M61 southbound and then the M65 westbound rejoining the M6 southbound at junction 29.
