A case review of the death of baby Charlie Hunt will not be made public until the new year, it has been revealed.

Darren Newton, 32, from Earby, was jailed for at least 24 years on Thursday after being convicted of the 15-month-old’s murder.

Newton, who was the former boyfriend of the baby’s mother Laura Chapman, filmed himself on his mobile phone repeatedly slapping, prodding and kicking the child while babysitting.

Lancashire County Council (LCC) yesterday revealed that a serious case review (SCR), undertaken after Charlie's death in November last year, will only be made public once the findings have been discussed with Charlie’s parents, Laura Chapman and Richard Hunt.

Louise Taylor, LCC’s director for specialist and direct intervention services, said the the multi-agency Lancashire Safeguarding Children Board commissioned the SCR, which has now been completed.

She said: “SCRs are carried out whenever a child dies and abuse or neglect is known or suspected to be a factor, irrespective of whether social workers have been involved with the family.

“It is an opportunity to enable professionals to learn from the case.

“The Safeguarding Board commissions an independent person to write an overview report that brings together and analyses all the information, and makes recommendations for future action.

“A summary of the review is published on the Safeguarding Board’s website as soon as possible, but the timing of this can of course be affected by external factors.

“The publication must wait until criminal proceedings are completed, so as not to prejudice the proceedings in any way.

“We must also wait until we have been able to discuss the SCR's findings sensitively and appropriately with the family.”

Charlie had spent the first six months of his life being monitored by social services but was not classed as ‘at risk’ at the time of his death.

Newton denied hitting Charlie on the day of his death, insisting he had appeared happy and content before he fell ill.But checks of his mobile phone revealed a series of horrific video clips of Charlie being abused over several months.
