We want your help to monitor East Lancashire gritting

We want your help to monitor East Lancashire gritting We want your help to monitor East Lancashire gritting

TODAY the Lancashire Telegraph launches Grit Watch — a campaign urging YOU to tell us if your roads are being gritted properly.

After previous years of winter chaos the Lancashire Telegraph is aiming to put authorities on the spot, to hold them accountable.

But to do this we need you to be our eyes and ears.

The Lancashire Telegraph’s website has launched a Grit Watch section for the whole of the winter where we will publish your comments and pictures.

And we will also be publishing your views in the paper.

Authorities have pledged to keep the motorways and A-roads as well as other key routes clear.

Residential areas rely on grit bins, which bosses have said will be topped up throughout the winter.

Therefore we want you to highlight to us where things are not working.

This could be a main road that is treacherous or a grit bin that is left empty, leaving community roads like ice rinks.

The Lancashire Telegraph will then highlight the cases with the authorities and seek to get an explanation or action.

Click on the link below for the Grit Watch section, to view problems that have been reported and to add your own reports.

I have noted the fact they have gritted in Hyndburn yet the colour of the grit is strange and the snow remains, I wonder...have they purchased the phoney grit?
.
Still an improvement on last year as the LCC sold the grit to Manchester Airport, I am still waiting for my payment for this sale reflected in my council tax bill....

it would be better if cameras are installed to track gritting properly

it would costs £200 but would last 5 years and over and it would ease complaints

Great campaign LT! But what exactly are you going to do about any roads not gritted. Are you going to grit them yourself? If the weather gets as bad as last year, there won't be any gritting as no point gritting on snow! Glad the local paper is leading the way - not!

Dear LET. I would love to join your crappy campaign but unfortunatley I have a life. Maybe you should monitor what people are doing to help themselves this winter.

Ghanto - No more cameras please!

Cicely Lane, Blackburn is a death trap. The road clearly has not been gritted, I had to divert this morning and also Manxman Road, corner of Morecambe Road, Blackburn.

News on the street is that these tramps that work for the council are just driving around acting as though they're spreading the grit instead they're selling the grit

And when the bad weather has passed by, and the campaign is defunct - will you start a Pot Hole Watch and then maybe you could spot a correlation between the two...

The main roads are ALL getting treated but it just doesn't work if there is fallING snow or low temperatures or if traffic is so locked it doesn't activate it. Side streets will NEVER get treated so get over it!

GRIT WATCH= Another complainer's charter. Lancashire Telegraph, please, please get back to some more thought provoking intelligent journalism instead of the garbage you have continually spouted over the previous 12 months.

Millhill (Blackburn's tax payer subsidised carpark for BRFC) will be a shambles this weekend when it comes to match day. Aquaduct Rd and others in particular. Thankfully the gritters have done a good job there.

Still, emergency services will be suspended or severely delayed in that area due to lengthy double parking - enjoy!

Unfortunately this only works if the commenters can tell if gritting has taken place. Last year I saw posts saying that main roads in Darwen inlcuding mine hadn't been gritted... they had been... I watched the gritters go past at least twice during the evening but because people expect grit to magically melt away snow in an instant they wail about it not being done.

Can report that gritters are doing the job in Darwen......
What a daft campaign! I saw a woman taking a picture of the road and snow on Everton Street last night after she abandoned her car... The road had been gritted numerous times.
Get WINTER or ALL SEASON TYRES INSTALLED. Your supplied tyres are rubbish if they are slipping in this weather - blame yourself for wanting cheap cars.......

LET get off your fat rumps and do your own investigating.

Grit watch what a pathetic indictment of your paper. Supposed to be a newspaper not trying to stir up the proverbial, probably because your website isn't getting enough hits.

Agree with above, what will be next POTHOLES, get a life.

LET why don't you reporters get up in the middle of the night to make the roads safe for us in the morning, no because you are all tucked up in your beds having a go at the people that are willing to get up, thanks a lot lads for keeping us safe I appreciate your efforts

The council cant grit every road....just not possible either with man power or the amount of grit needed.
But I will ask how many of you have got off your a*se and moved some of the snow and ice yourselves...the answer is not many. I am in my 60s and me and a neighbor in his early 70s cleared a lot of our road...out there until 8.00 last night.
So why dont some of you have a go at clearing some roads and doing a bit of self help instead of whining.

Last year when it was far worse I cleared loads of snow and ice off the road - properly!
This year I have gritted outside my house and neighbours BUT there is no need to do the road because the council have correctly gritted numerous times.
I also have winter tyres as mentioned and if others havn't then TOUGH! Do NOT go out in car if it is not equipped correctly.

Well perhaps this is the time that the feckless are brought into use and forced to get up, ignore Jeremy Kyle and get themselves down to the local Job Centre and actually, for once in their lives earn their keep.

I think that if LET have started this campaign to be able to slag the council then it is failing miserably as the general concensus seems to be that roads are being gritted. And lets be honest compared to other parts of the country we have only had a little snow and it really doesn't warrant schools closing and people saying they can't get into to work or get to the shops.
I think that the council are doing a good job keeping the main roads / bus routes gritted. I notice the campaign asks people to complain about what is not being done without adding that they also want to hear about what is.
Typical LET

shows how busy council staff are, commenting on here about the roads being gritted,in MOST areas they are not, that's the point in this campaign!!!get off your works PC and get working...if the roads WERE gritted there would be no problem, think about it...GRITT DOES MELT SNOW and it helps with traction....

I think compared to last year the main roads have been gritted alot better and are clear to drive on, so well done to all the people who have been out there griting, they get alot of stick most of the time but should also be praised when they a good job. well done to all concerned

I defended the gritting earlier BUT roads that had been gritted up until Friday have now not been gritted since and the ice was terrible on some roads. Either do them or don't do them at all. Easier to drive on snow than black ice!
