ROGUE jackdaws caused a magistrates court sitting in East Lancashire to be abandoned yesterday.

Three wild birds managed to get into the main hearing room at the Rawtenstall courthouse, in Oakley Road.

Court staff suspended hearings in the upstairs portion of the St Mary's Chambers building and moved around 10 cases to a smaller courtroom downstairs.

Two other trials, which had been due to be heard in the second courtroom, were delayed as a result of the move.

Security staff eventually managed to persuade the jackdaws to leave the courtroom.

Magistrates who had been due to hear cases in the main courtroom were contacted and warned not to attend.
