BUILDING Schools for the Future programmes in Hyndburn and Rossendale could still go ahead after a review, according to an MP.

Hyndburn and Haslingden representative Graham Jones has questioned the coalition Government’s schools boss about Lancashire County Council’s BSF scheme after it was axed.

Under the council’s BSF scheme schools such as Accrington St Christopher's CofE High School, Alder Grange Community and Technology School, and The Hollins Technology College were in line £100millions of investment to rebuild and rejuvenate the premises.

The scheme along with others across the country were prematurely ended by Michael Gove, secretary of state for education, once Labour left office.

MP Jones raised the issue with schools minister Nick Gibb following concerns that there are schools in the area were in ‘urgent need of new buildings’.

He said: “There are schools across the country and in Lancashire which are in urgent need of new buildings and were denied funding.

“There are of course tough decisions to be made in order to get the best value for money, but this appears to have been at the expense of giving the future generation of this country the educational resources they need and deserve.”

In response to his concerns Mr Gibb has revealed that the Government is looking into ways to create a capital funding programme to regenerate dilapidated school buildings.

He said: "This will include investment in schools that were not prioritised for funding under the BSF programme including those listed above. The review team will provide an interim report in the autumn and a final report by the end of the year.”
