A FAMILY business in East Lancashire beat off stiff competition from a Michelin-starred restaurant in London’s Mayfair to be crowned Gordon Ramsay’s Best Chinese Restaurant 2010.

The Yu and You Restaurant in the Ribble Valley went head to head with Kai, one of only three Chinese restaurants in the UK with a Michelin star, on the the celebrity chef’s channel four programme.

Staff at the restaurants were put through a series of gruelling tests which included secret diners and undercover filming, a coach load of hungry diners all arriving at once, and a final nerve-wracking test at Gordon's flagship restaurant in London’s Royal Hospital Road.

But head chef Victor and his father Charlie Yu from the restaurant in Longsight Road, Copster Green, managed to take the top spot with Ramsay calling their dish of wagyu beef “absolutely beautiful”.

After being crowned the winner’s, a tearful Victor said: “I am very happy and I can’t wait to tell my mum. Just so proud.”

“I think we won because of our fresh and good quality ingredients and because Gordon was very impressed with how we worked as a family unit.”

Father and sous chef, Charlie, opened his first business a fish and chip shop more than 30 years ago before opening a previous incarnation of Yu and You in Bolton in 1989 and moving to the current premises in 2004.

Mr Ramsay said: “It was not just based on one dish. It was based on the whole experience and You and Yu were able to pull that off.

p> “They have a great restaurant. What an amazing family, they are consistent and united.”

The restaurant will now go through to the semi-finals of Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.
