A MUM-of-four cut short her career in hairdressing and retrained as a plumber to fulfil her dad’s last wish.

Kelly Adamson, 33, enrolled on a plumbing course with Blackburn-based training 2000 following her father Terry’s death.

She said her dad, who had been a plumber throughout his working life, wanted her to follow in his footsteps.

Kelly, who is the only female on the course, had trained as a hairdresser for a year and worked in a salon for three years but left when her dad fell ill.

She started going to work with him and promised that she would carry on working as a plumber.

And now she is urging other people to follow their dreams and consider re-training.

Kelly, from Leyland, said: “It was my dad’s last wish for me to get into the plumbing trade.

“He had always drummed it into my head that that’s what I should do, but I never thought I could do it and it wasn’t until he died a few years ago that I realised that it was the career for me.

I went to lots of companies to try and get into plumbing and no-one helped.

“Then one day I saw some lads working on a house and plucked up the courage to ask for their advice on how I could get into the trade.

From there I got in touch with Training 2000 and started my first programme.

I love my work and it’s really pleasing to know I’m making my family proud.”

The single mum of Alea, three, Lucy, six, James, 13, and Thomas 16 has now her NVQ Level Two in Plumbing, Kelly and has secured work with J&J Plumbing and Heating.

Eventually Kelly hopes to run a female plumbing firm.

Lindsay Dust, career development advisor at Training 2000, added: “Kelly is a highly dedicated and has done exceptionally well.”
