TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'hardworking' town centre caretaker who was found dead close to a block of flats in Blackburn.

The body of Bernard Hayhurst, was found by a passer-by at Witton Parade, behind the Griffin Pub in the Galligreaves area of town at 7.40am on Saturday.

Police said his death appeared to be a tragic accident.

They believe he fell while attempting to climb the stairs to his flat and sustained head injuries.

The 55-year-old started with Blackburn with Darwen council in 2004 and mainly worked in cleansing and ground maintenance.

But was also drafted in to help prepare for town centre events, particularly at Christmas.

In 2006, Bernard received a personal letter of thanks from his boss Peter Hunt for his involvement in the Condoleezza Rice visit. Peter Hunt, director of regeneration and environment, said: "Bernard was a very well respected member for staff who people spoke very highly of.

“He worked hard and used his initiative. He always went above and beyond in the way he carried out his duties. Bernard got on with everyone and will be sadly missed."

Mr Hayhurst leaves a son and a daughter.
