COUNCILLORS have called for an urgent review of safety on Burnley Road, Bacup, following Monday's accident which killed 45-year-old motorcyclist Michael Veevers.

Mr Veevers died in Royal Preston Hospital after the collision, while his son Dean, 19, is in a stable condition at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

In the past five years there have been 22 accidents with 39 casualties on the road, which has many blind bends and hill crests.

These have included two children and a cyclist.

Lancashire County Council said the latest was in June when two adults were left with serious injuries.

Coun Jimmy Eaton said: “There have been a number of accidents. It is a very, very busy road. Something needs to be done about it.

“I would love to see a fixed speed camera.”

Coun Peter Sheen said: “Unfortunately by the Deerplay Inn there are no speed restrictions. Road safety is a fustrating area as a ward councillor.

“There are blind bends and crests and it is not an easy road. It is busy into Burnley.

"A speed restriction at the Deerplay would help.”
