TWO men remain critically ill in hospital after their quad bike struck a toddler’s pushchair and injured six people in an horrific accident on Saturday.

The bike careered off a road in Accrington and mounted the pavement before hitting the pedestrians, including a mother and her baby.

Lyndsay Shearon said she was standing in Clement Street with her family when two men riding the black and gold bike appeared to lose control and hurtled towards them, crumpling her nine-month-old daughter’s pushchair just before 4pm on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who lives in Union Street, was with her daughter Morgan, Joanne Gregson, 38, eight-year-old Demi-Jo Gregson, Nicolle Gregson, 18, and 16-month-old Kian Sledden when the bike hit them.

Police said the driver and the passenger, who were not wearing helmets, were flung into the air hitting a lamppost and a wall in the crash.

As the emergency services arrived on the scene, both men lay unconscious on the floor.

The 34-year-old rider, Asaf Hussain, who owns the XXL Gym off Corporation Street, was airlifted to hospital with serious head and internal injuries.

The 30-year-old passenger, Mr Hussain’s cousin Arfan Arif, also suffered serious head and internal injuries.

Both men remain in the intensive care unit in Preston.

Paramedics treated the pedestrians at the scene before they were taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Ms Shearon said: “They were speeding towards the hill in Augusta Street and all of a sudden they clipped the kerb and the bike flipped over and hit my baby’s pram with my baby in it.

“It was terrifying. I just ran towards Morgan because the pram was crumpled but she was lucky because I think it saved her life.

“She was covered in blood because she had a big gash on her forehead and she was bruised all over.

"She had to spend all night in hospital. It was so worrying.”

“I just felt sick. Someone could have been killed.”

Nicolle Gregson, who was standing outside the house with her son Kian, needed stitches in her mouth after the bike hit her in the face.

The 18-year-old former pupil at Our Lady and St John High School, Blackburn, said: “We were waiting outside the house for my sister to bring the keys when we saw this bike coming down the road.

"We thought they were going to turn but they seemed to lose control and they crashed into us.

“Everyone was screaming and the next thing I can remember was the ambulance arriving.

"Everyone was just frantic. I can’t believe this.”

Nicolle’s eight-year-old sister Demi-Jo also suffered a fractured arm and bruising.

Her mother, Joanne said: “My whole family was out there and we are just so lucky.

"It feels like someone up there was looking after us because it could have been much worse.

“The two men were lying on the floor covered in blood and not moving. It was horrible.”

Inspector Ilyas Mohmed, of Blackburn Police, said: “The bike had been coming towards Augusta Street to the junction of Clement Street and they were trying to negotiate a turn when they lost control of the vehicle and mounted the footpath hitting the pedestrians.

“Both men, who were not wearing helmets, were thrown off the bike and hit a wall and a lamp-post.

"We cordoned the area off as paramedics attended to the pedestrians and the two men.

“The incident is now being investigated by our road policing unit.”
