A PENSIONER celebrated her 100th birthday — and was overwhelmed to receive her telegram from the Queen.

Jemima Yates, who lives at the Magdalene House nursing and residential home, Shear Bank Road, Blackburn, turned 100 yesterday.

Bosses at the nursing home organised a party for her, and her family from Scotland came down for the day to celebrate.

Mrs Yates, who was born in Leicester but moved to Blackburn when she was very young, was married to Fred Yates. They had one daughter.

Tracey Roberts, senior care assistant at the home, said: “She has a wicked sense of humour and is bright as a button.”

Philippa Bailey, manager of Magdalene House, said: “Jemima was very excited about getting a telegram from the Queen.

"It’s all she’s talked about for the last month. She’s really thrilled. It’s a big deal to her.”

The former weaver loved to dance and travel with her sisters.

She moved to Magdalene House in 2006 from Ferrier Court, Blackburn.
