A THUG attacked a man with a glass or bottle in a Ramsbottom bar early on Sunday morning.
A 23-year-old man was hit at about 12.45am as Callenders, in Bolton Street, was closing.
He was taken to hospital where his head wound was stapled.
The victim was attacked from behind and has been unable to offer a description of his attacker.
Detective Constable Lee Walker said: "Only a coward would attack someone from behind with a weapon.
"The bar was closing at the time of the attack and would have been fairly busy.
"I would like to hear from anyone who was in the bar and might be able to help me identify the offender."
