AN artist from Burnley is making waves in the fashion industry after catching the eye of two of the world’s biggest labels.

Earlier this year a representative of Diesel spotted Alex Daw, 27, while he was working in view of the public in the window of the Cole Building, in London, as part of his ‘Cut Out and Keep’ debut solo exhibition.

Impressed by Alex’s work – as well as the fact that a crowd had gathered in the pouring rain to watch the former Habergham High School pupil’s creative process – the global brand flew him to Germany to create artwork for their two stores in Berlin.

Alex, who has had work displayed in the National Gallery and sold pieces to celebrities, including Madonna and Bob Dylan, was also identified by Ralph Lauren Polo Jeans Co as one of 50 up-and-coming artists they wanted to contribute to their Art Stars project.

The fashion house challenged the young artists to take inspiration from the iconic Star Spangled Banner flag, which is synonymous with the brand, to create three-dimensional pieces on stars made from denim.

The work will be hung in selected Polo Jeans Co shops across Europe before coming together in an exhibition in London later this year.

Alex’s designs will also be incorporated into one of their clothing lines and he has been commissioned to create artwork for their shows.

The former Brunshaw Primary School pupil said: “It’s sweet.

"I’m meeting people from all over the world. When I got to Berlin I was having dinner with an Italian, a Dutchman and a load of Germans.

"It’s bizarre where you find yourself sometimes but great nonetheless.”

Alex, whose mum Liz lives in Applecross Drive, Burnley, studied at the prestigious Chelsea School of Art in London after gaining a first-class fine art degree from the University of Central Lancashire.

He recently set-up a live, work space in a pre-war warehouse in Hackney, which he hopes to shape into a gallery. Working with his brother Laurence, he has organised the ‘Little London Fields’ arts and music festival, on August 7.

But the ex-Burnley College student said he would jump at the chance to work on a project in his home town.

He said: “I’m mega busy. But I would love the opportunity to do something back home in Burnley – maybe a mural somewhere, or a sculpture.

"I have tons of ideas and it’s just a matter of time before I sort it out.”
